I stumbled across this headline on the Reuters scrawl:
GOP Convention: Bush Still Enjoys Strong Support in Nebraska
How can that be? And I don’t mean to single out Nebraska. I’m asking in a much broader sense. How can that be? I tried to step outside of myself and take a good, long, non-judgmental look at the President. I wanted to be completely objective and set aside any emotion. I just don’t see it. How can anyone still support that guy?

This is “Shine” by Willie Cole. It’s a primitive-style mask made from more than a dozen high-heeled women’s shoes. Upon first glance, I didn’t see the shoes. Could I have come up with something as bizarre and creative as that? Not in this lifetime. It’s part of a new exhibit that just opened at the Met.

Those pictures are really good… much better than I can draw! Being able to draw is a great talent but, as you say, it’s got to be nutured in the right way. I’m sure she’ll do fine with you watching her back.

All: Last summer we were visiting my niece in Arlington, VA and attended a T-ball game. She was playing second base. She had a stick and was drawing in the dirt. She wasn’t paying attention to the game—she couldn’t care less—and a ball was hit to her. It rolled right past her into the outfield. I walked over and she had drawn a caricature of Dora the Explorer in the dirt that was done better than any 5-year old had a right to.
I would say by all means discourage developing any artistic talent! Get that kid’s college fund straightened out, teach her something about managing off shore workforces so she’ll always have a job!Of course if she’s really an artist none of that will matter, because she will have to make art.Which is also good. It’s just different. You know, in a lifelong poverty sense.—Okay, I’m half-kidding. But I’m not saying which half.
mjp: My sister-in-law is a successful corporate executive and I think she’d prefer that her daughter show an inclination towards law or finance or medicine, but you know how that goes.
love the still life… and the shoe-mask! i do think it’s a case of either you have that vision or you don’t! as for Nebraska? all i can think is that they’re good hearted people who have sent many of their children off to die for the nation, not realizing they’re dying for an endless war for oil. and they don’t want to believe that the kids died in vain… but i’d like to slap ’em with a “WAKE THE FUCK UP” stick. that’s for sure…
